Most moving-day stress comes from things that could have been handled a week earlier. The crew can only move as fast as the house is ready, so a little prep goes a long way.
Two weeks out, book your elevator or loading dock if you live in an apartment or high-rise, and check your complex's move-out rules. Many Houston buildings only allow moves in set windows. Confirm utilities and internet at the new place, and start packing the rooms you use least: guest rooms, closets, and the garage.
The week before, empty and defrost the refrigerator if it's moving, drain gas from mowers and tools, and set aside a box of essentials: chargers, medications, toiletries, a change of clothes, paper towels, and a basic toolkit. That box rides with you, not on the truck.
The night before, strip the beds, pack the last of the kitchen, and make sure every box is labeled with the room it's going to. On the morning of the move, walk the crew through the house, point out anything fragile or anything that isn't going, and keep a clear path from the front door to the truck. After that, let the crew work.
